LG on the Durban Coast
Ask for the coastal specification, not the standard model. The standard DUALCOOL condenser is built for general use. Within a kilometre or two of the sea — Umhlanga, La Lucia, Umdloti, the Bluff, Amanzimtoti, Warner Beach — the aluminium fins on an untreated coil will pit and powder within a few seasons. Ask the supplier specifically what corrosion protection the model you are quoted carries, and get the answer in writing on the quote.
The ten-year figure does not cover the fins. Compressor cover is about the compressor. Fin corrosion, a rusted base pan and a failed fan motor on a salt-exposed unit are not compressor failures, and they are the failures that actually retire coastal units. A coil that has corroded enough to restrict airflow will eventually kill the compressor, but the claim on the way there is usually declined as environmental damage.
Position is worth more than specification. A condenser on a sheltered courtyard or landward wall takes a fraction of the salt that the same unit takes on a seaward elevation.
